A recent study into disinformation in Belgium, The Netherlands and Spain revealed that a primary strategy for combatting the spread of disinformation is the implementation of educational programs and citizen training.

This study, carried out in the context of the EU supported SMILES project, investigated the overall situation of digital media literacy education in these countries and found that many of these strategies are supported by government bodies. However, lack of policy, continuity and dependence on individual, once-off initiatives remain pressing challenges.

The SMILES project’s research team identified integrating media literacy activities in existing school subjects as one of the possible solutions to these challenges.
