Are you a teacher or librarian and do you want to make young people more resilient against disinformation and fake news? Then join the international media literacy project SMILES. In this project, librarians and teachers use new methods to increase their knowledge and skills in recognizing and combating fake news. With this expertise they can help young people between the ages of 12 and 15. This process is carried out in schools and libraries in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain.

A recent study into disinformation in Belgium, The Netherlands and Spain revealed that a primary strategy for combatting the spread of disinformation is the implementation of educational programs and citizen training.
This study, carried out in the context of the EU supported SMILES project, investigated the overall situation of digital media literacy education in these countries and found that many of these strategies are supported by government bodies. SMILES is an international project where six organisations from three countries are collaborating to develop and test innovative approaches to combating the spread of fake news. The project is led by KB, the National Library of the Netherlands and the other partners are the Institute of Sound and Vision and The Hague University of Applied Sciences from the Netherlands, Fundación Goteo/Platoniq from Spain, and Public Libraries 2030 and the Media and Learning Association both of whom will focus on the situation in Belgium.
