Closing Smiles through a successful April Fool's joke at The Erasmus in Almelo
Pupils from class HV1B of the Erasmus school in Almelo concluded the Smiles program with a successful April Fool's joke. The Public Library of Almelo and De Twentsche courant Tubantia were also part of the plot.
With this action, the students put their acquired knowledge and skills through Smiles directly into practice. All students, parents/carers and teachers received a letter 'as a joke' on March 31 in which the school announced that from May 1th all mobile phones in the school must have a case with The Erasmus logo. In this way there was more uniformity in the school. According to the newspaper, this led to 'quite a fuss about this bizarre rule'. That's why the students announced on April 1 that it was an April Fool's joke and that it was all made up. With this they showed how easy it is to spread disinformation and how important it is to remain critical of the information you are presented with: being news wise against desinformation.
The Erasmus and Library Almelo is one of the 10 teams that participated in the Smiles programme. They test the developed modules in the European media literacy program Smiles at their school. Their experiences and results will become one of the sub-sessions on April 18 during the congress News wisdom against disinformation. Doing?! presented. Learn more about the program.
