National Library of The Netherlands

The National Library of the Netherlands (Koninklijke Bibliotheek, KB) is responsible for maintaining and providing Dutch cultural heritage in printed, manuscript and increasingly also digital formats. Since 31 August 1993, the KB has been an independent administrative body, financed by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The Public Library Provisions System Act (Wsob) came into force on 1 January 2015, granting the KB a governing role within the network of public libraries and making the KB responsible for carrying out system-related tasks.

Driven by the power of the written word the KB further invest in intellectual development, proficiency and creativity in the Netherlands. To this end, the KB seeks collaboration with partners in the domains of public libraries, cultural heritage and academics. The KB promotes the visibility, usability and longevity of the Dutch Library Collection, defined as the collective holdings of all publicly funded libraries in the Netherlands.

The KB participates in the activities of some 30 national and international organizations, including:

• Consortium of the Netherlands university libraries and the National Library (UKB)
• GII, (Consortium) Gemeenschappelijke Informatie-infrastructuur
• SURF Platform ICT en Onderzoek
• OCLC, centrum voor bibliotheekautomatisering
• International Federation of Library Associations & Institutions (IFLA)
• Conference of European National Librarians (CENL)
• Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL)
